Overview
Safe-T-Sweep, Inc. is a family owned and operated business that has been serving the area for over 30 years. We take care of your house and chimney as if it were our own. Jonathan Barr, the current owner, is a second generation chimney sweep. He took the business over from his father Ken Barr, who was an Upper Darby High School teacher for 34 years. We use only the finest materials, no big Box store products. The Liners that we install come with a Fully Transferable Forever Warranty which is good for the life of the chimney. We also install a variety of Stainless Steel and Copper chimney caps. One of the best products we offer is an Energy-Saving Lock-Top Sealing Damper, this is one of the few Green products available, not only does it save on your utility bill, but it puts a stop to the nasty Stink Bugs coming in through the chimney. We not only sweep and inspect your chimney, but if your fireplace has glass doors, we will take the time to clean them also, which I am sure most companies do not offer this service. Being a Marine taught me many things but most importantly at boot camp we learned "attention to detail". I have carried this trait forward in our business. We look forward to being able to serve you. God Bless.

Finding a Qualified Media Chimney Sweeping Company
Each year people invest in improving and repairing their home, yet they overlook a very important part of the home that could pose a serious danger if neglected. Many people tend to think that a chimney only needs regular inspection and cleaning by a Media chimney sweeping company if they use wood in their wood stove or fireplace. The fact is that while chimneys used with wood burning stoves and fireplaces will need more frequent cleaning, any chimney that is used for heating your home, no matter the type of fuel, needs to be cleaned and inspected on a regular basis.
Media chimney sweeping professionals provide a very necessary service for those that heat their home with any type of fuel, especially those with fire places and wood burning stoves. Routine cleaning done by a professional Media chimney sweeping company is a peculiarly important step in preventing chimney fires. A chimney fire can be caused by a buildup of a highly flammable black sticky substance called creosote. The creosote develops from condensed smoke and adheres to the inside of the chimney. In some instances a chimney fire may be limited to the chimney but sparks and heat created can ignite other nearby combustible objects, such as the interiors of walls, attic spaces or the roof.
Before You Hire any Media Chimney Sweeping Company
You could clean the chimney yourself or call a reliable Media chimney sweeping professional to do the job for you. Before you decide to tackle the job yourself you need ask yourself a few questions. Do you have a fear of heights? Do you feel comfortable on a ladder? Do you even own a ladder? What about your physical condition? Cleaning a chimney can be exhausting work not to mention, potentially dangerous, time consuming and extremely messy. Ultimately you might find you’re better off having the job done by a qualified Media chimney sweeping company.
Increased demand for chimney sweeping services has lead to a number of disreputable companies cropping up with the only intention being to take your money and run. So it’s very important that you do a thorough background investigation of any Media chimney sweeping company you might consider hiring. Ask for proof of identity and any other credentials. Call your local Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have ever been filed.
Things to Ask the Media Chimney Sweeping Contractor
Before you decide to hire any Media chimney sweeping company, you should ask about the company's qualifications or the chimney sweep's degree of training. A qualified chimney sweep will do more than simply use a brush to scrub down the inside of the chimney. Many chimney sweeping companies are members of associations specific to their trade and must adhere to stringent guidelines involving training. A Media chimney sweeping professional that works independently may often receive their certification by taking courses from a local fire safety training center.
Be sure the Media chimney sweeping contractor carries the necessary insurance. As with any other contractor a chimney sweep should have valid liability and workman’s compensation insurance in place. Don’t mistakenly believe that your homeowner’s insurance policy will cover any mishaps. It may not. Any time you have someone come on your property to do a job you run the risk of a possible accident. You could be held liable for medical and other expenses if the Media chimney sweeping contractor doesn’t have the proper insurance. It simply isn’t worth the risk.
Pricing of a Media chimney sweeping service can sometimes be an indication of the quality or extent of the job they do. Cleaning a chimney involves more than a couple of passes with a brush but if the price is cheap, that may in actuality be all you will get. Get quotes from a few different chimney sweeping companies to find out the current average pricing. If a price seems comparatively low, you may not be getting the quality of service that you need. The peace of mind you’ll receive from having the job done right will be worth the extra money you’ll spend for a qualified Media chimney sweeping professional.
If you are concerned about your budget, look for a Media chimney sweeping company that does inspections and cleanings only. Some chimney sweeps work for large heating equipment and maintenance companies and if they discover any problems they may try to convince you to have work done that you can’t afford. While repairs may indeed be necessary you should be able to choose the contractor of your choice to do the job and possibly at a better price with more affordable terms. It’s part of a Media chimney sweeping company’s job to point out problems and potential dangers but you should never feel obligated to have them do the work.
Making an Appointment with a reputable Media Chimney Sweeping Contractor
Remember that timing is important. Make certain you plan ahead if you need hire a Media chimney sweeping professional. Many people will want to hire a chimney sweep just before the onset of the heating season only to discover there is a long waiting list. Just like any other contractor, a chimney sweeping contractor has a busy season and you might find it difficult to schedule an appointment if you wait until the last minute. It’s probably a much better idea to set up an appointment during the off season such as later in the spring or summer when the Media chimney sweeping company isn’t quite so busy.
No matter the type of fuel you use to heat your home it’s important to make sure your chimney is in good condition. If you rely heavily on wood as a source of heat, two or three cleanings during the heating season would not be excessive. Even if you only use your fireplace or wood stove for the occasional ambiance you should have your chimney inspected on a regular basis. A yearly cleaning and inspection by a qualified Media chimney sweeping service is a small price to pay to protect your family from the dangers associated with chimney fires and dangerous carbon monoxide gases.
Off season discount of $20.00, this is good in the Spring and Summer!

This was an excellent experience. Jon (the owner) showed up when he said he would. He was friendly, appeared to know his business, and honest. I originally called him (based on his Angie's List rating) and asked how much it would cost to have both chimneys cleaned and capped. He estimated $600. But when he inspected our chimneys, he told me that they were both clean. So he only charged me for the caps. It should be noted that a lesser man could have gone through the motions and charged me for the cleaning. He also inspected the crown (which I could not see because I was not about to climb the ladder). Again, he could have told me that it needed patching. But instead, he described the problems (which he thought were too minor to require repair) and told me that I didn't need any repair work done. There have been too many instances where contractors have left me angry and frustrated. This gentleman was like getting into the Way back machine. I truly believes that he values his customers and enjoys his work! If you need similar work, give him a call. I am confident that you won't be disappointed.

I was told by my plumber that I need a new chimney liner. I called 3 companies for estimates. Two of them said my system was kaput, and I should shut it down to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning...rush, rush; huge job to install liner. Safe-t-Sweep evaluated the situation, arriving to fulfill my request for an estimate for a new chimney liner. They explored the chimney with mirrors, from both top and bottom. Conclusion: You need a good sweeping, not a chimney liner. It would have been a boon to their bottom line to recommend a liner, but they were scrupulously honest in telling me I did not NEED a new liner. The price differential between installation of a new liner and a simple sweep was over $1500. So, I am impressed with the integrity of this company. The gentleman who came to sweep the chimney arrived promptly in his stovepipe hat, completed his work efficiently, and left the basement cleaner than it has been in years. I highly recommend this group...honest, and thorough. I especially appreciate the honesty, since I am recently widowed, and thus new to handling these sorts of house problems. Use them if you have a need. Wonderful group.

Jon and his father showed up promptly. They were extremely nice and professional. They did a thorough job and made sure everything was clean. Jon offered advice on some things that we needed to attend to and explained how to remedy the problems inexpensively on our own. He was also kind enough to remove an old antenna that was attached to the chimney and also cleaned some leaves and other debris from some of the gutters while he was on the roof doing his inspection. He even carted the antenna away for us and did not charge anything for doing so. He also educated my wife and I on the proper way to start a fire to make sure that the smoke goes up the chimney (and not into our house, a problem that prompted out contacting Safe-T-Sweep.) Everything has been great with the fireplace since. I highly recommend (and will in the future hire) Safe-T-Sweep for our chimney care.
